    Cognitive Assessments

Cognitive assessment evaluates an individual’s overall thinking and reasoning skills, often referred to as intellectual functioning.

These assessments are commonly recommended when someone experiences challenges with learning, understanding, or navigating difficulties in school, tertiary education, or the workplace.

Some individuals may also pursue cognitive assessments to determine their eligibility for support services or funding programs. Additionally, these assessments provide valuable insights into a person’s cognitive strengths and abilities.

Cognitive assessments typically involve standardised intelligence tests from the Wechsler suite, which assess key areas such as:

    • Verbal Comprehension – Understanding spoken information, reasoning with language, and effectively expressing thoughts.
    • Perceptual Reasoning – Processing and organizing visual information to solve problems.
    • Working Memory – Retaining and manipulating information in short-term memory.
    • Processing Speed – Quickly and accurately identifying, scanning, and interpreting information.

The specific assessment tool used depends on the individual’s age and the purpose of the referral. The Wechsler tests are designed for different age groups as outlined below:

    • WPPSI-IV (Pre-school & Primary): 4 years to 7 years 7 months
    • WISC-V (Children): 6 years to 16 years 11 months
    • WAIS-IV (Adults): 16 years to 90 years 11 months

What’s Involved in an Cognitive Assessment?

The assessment process typically commences with an extensive interview, exploring comprehensive developmental, social, and educational history. Whenever possible, we involve parents/caregivers and, for children and young adolescents, their teachers. This multi-perspective approach enhances our understanding of the individual’s functioning across various settings.
